How To Stay Calm During Trying Times

As we settle into this new normal of spending much, much more time homebound, it’s important to fill our mind with things that encourage us.

Social media and world news are providing daily updates about the latest outbreaks and mortality rates. As a result, many people are fearful and worried, and it would seem that the anxiety is spreading more rapidly that the virus itself, causing unnecessary fear and panic. During times like this, it is of course normal to feel worried or nervous about catching a potentially deadly virus, but for some the fear, anxiety and worry can also become abnormal.

In this situation it is important to understand why many people may have an alarmist response. You can either choose to let panic feed on your mind and body, and let it grow stronger at the expense of your life. Or, you can choose to see your situation in perspective, stay positive, and end the panic then and there. But how do you withstand the huge waves of a crisis, let alone being positive about it, while they are coming at you in breakneck speed? Here are a few ways to consider:

1.Refrain from shaming and blaming – Focus on what you can do rather than what you cannot to keep safe. This is your responsibility, this is what you can control. Minimise the risk of infection within your own environment. Be mindful of good sanitation and avoid international travel if advised to do so. Taking charge of your physical and psychological environment will enable to keep perspective whilst still acknowledging the serious concerns in a healthier non catastrophic way.

2. Quit being a victim – It is easier to assume the role of a victim during tough times than taking responsibilities for yourself. But doing so will only prolong your suffering and put off people who may be able to help you out. Letting go of the victim label also frees you from resentment and bitterness which will only jam up the creative energies you need to get out of the mess.

3. Focus on the positives – No matter how stressful a situation may be, there are always some positives you can find in it. It is our unwillingness to look at them that blind us to the brighter sides.

4. Give thanks – Listed the positives you can think of, give thanks for the current situation as well as the things that you already have.

5. Get enough sleep – During stressful time, we’re likely to skip on sleep, but in reality, you will need more quality sleep during stressful times than ever so that you can remain energetic, clear-headed and focused to figure out your next steps.

6. Limit bad news intake – constantly been fed with gloomy news is enough to make even a dog panic for no reason. Hearing bad news once is enough, not ten times of the same news in different versions from every gadget that you own.

7. Get close to nature – Taking a mindful walk through the woods is also a great way to clear the mind and regain mental balance.

8. Re-evaluate the meaning of your life – Tough times present hard but valuable lessons that force us to re-evaluate the meanings we have been attaching to our lives.

9. Listen to uplifting podcasts and messages – listening to positive messages help strengthen our immune system and keep us going regardless of the chaos around us.

10. Pray – Having a relationship with God really helps as we can rely on Him to take care of us. We can let him know in pray what our needs are as we pray for ourselves and others.

Having a personal relationship with God, as really helped me calm down during this period. I’m able to trust and focus on the future rather than the moment. Nothing last forever and He is always with us. It will only make us stronger, loving and kinder. God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of love, power and sound mind. I’m wishing you a safe and peaceful week.

With Love Always,

Ife

Great advice! I think it’s important to not panic, but also be smart. I see a lot of people panicking but I also see a lot of people not taking this seriously and that’s also not the best response either. I love that you encourage a more measured way to react to this pandemic!
