Visit The Historic Magnolia House

Got invited to stay @thehistoricmagnolia  a fully restored new boutique hotel in Downtown Greensboro, NC! The hotel has been purposefully restored to its former glory as the original 1949 Green Book hotel that hosted notable Black figures including James Brown, Ray Charles, Ruth Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, Joe Tex, Carter G. Woodson, Jackie Robinson, Gladys Knight, and more. I fell in love the interior designs drew inspiration from a classic 1960s jazz lounge from the green walls to the theme rooms. I stayed overnight in the Blue Room and got breakfast in the morning consisting of chicken and waffles, fruits and tea. The hotel has a full room dining area with a choice of meals and drinks.

The Historic Magnolia House also served as a base to Civil Rights efforts according to Preservation Greensboro exemplified in May 1958 when the house was the site of the organizational meeting of the Guilford County Negro Democratic Club. Arthur Gist was elected treasurer. The club sought to coordinate with the Democratic Party and to meet Democratic candidates for public office during a time of Black empowerment in Greensboro. In July 1962, the house was a stop on the Freedom Drive in the south by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) to “end segregation at roadside restaurants”. The Magnolia House served as a training site for nonviolent protests, building on the civic engagement accomplished during the Woolworth Sit In demonstrations at area lunch counters of 1960. It was one of the few hotels in the Southern United States that allowed Black travelers to stay overnight in the mid-1900s, due to restrictions imposed by Jim Crow laws (which legalized racial segregation).

The Historic Magnolia House offers a modernized replica of the original hotel with four well-appointed guest rooms each paying homage to its famous past guests. Provides a modern take on Southern hospitality The Historic Magnolia House offers educational services and resources to the public about its history and the impact of the Green Book 💚 The perfect stay to celebrate Black History.

Are you into theme or historical hotels?
